What I Was Actually Testing
Captions AI's pricing page lists the Free plan's AI usage credits as flatly "None." But signing up for a real account grants a real, spendable balance — 200 credits, confirmed in the sidebar and the billing page the moment onboarding finishes. That's the first contradiction. The second one is what this post is actually about.
Every real generation gets logged in the account's own billing history at an exact, fractional cost. The question was simple: does the number on screen ever actually match that log?
The Billing History Is Precise. The Display Isn't.
Captions AI's own Credits Usage ledger breaks every charge down to the tenth of a credit. Real, confirmed entries from a single test account:
- Adding captions to an existing video — 0.5 credits, logged as a single "LLM processing" line.
- Dubbing a video into Spanish — 1.2 credits, split into two separate charges (0.8 and 0.4).
- Pulling a long-form video by link and generating one scored clip — 1.9 credits.
- Writing a script from a topic and generating a full voiceover video — 7.6 credits, itself broken down into LLM processing, image generation, and processing sub-costs.
Add up every real charge across a full testing session and the total comes to 12.2 credits spent from a starting balance of 200. That means the true remaining balance should read 187.8.
The Charge Is Accurate. The Number On Your Screen Just Isn't.
It's worth being precise about what this is and isn't. Nothing in this test suggests Captions AI charged the wrong amount for anything — every itemized line in the billing history matches what the feature actually cost. The discrepancy is specifically between that precise, logged total and the rounded whole number shown as your "balance" everywhere else in the app. The billing history has the truth. The number you'd actually glance at to decide whether you can afford your next generation does not.
Free Doesn't Refresh
Separately from the rounding issue, Captions AI's own help center is direct about the free-tier mechanic: "Free users are granted a one-time allotment of credits." Paid plans on Basic, Max, or Scale renew monthly. Free does not. Whatever balance a free account starts with — 200, in this case — is the only balance it will ever have.
