ElevenLabs Shows You 50 Credits. It Actually Charges 200.

Before you click generate on ElevenLabs' Sound Effects tool, the interface quotes you 50 credits. I generated one and watched my own usage page jump by 200 — confirmed twice, and it matches the exact number ElevenLabs' own pricing page lists for this mode.

What I Was Actually Testing

ElevenLabs' Sound Effects generator shows a live cost estimate right above the Generate button before you commit to anything. On a real Free-plan account, that estimate read 50 credits for a short "keyboard click" prompt.

I generated it, then went straight to the account's real usage ledger to see what actually got charged.

The Number On Screen Isn't The Number You Pay

The generation completed and produced four real audio variations. Checking the Subscription/usage page immediately afterward — the only fully authoritative balance source on the account, not the sidebar credit counter — showed the total climbed by 200 credits, not 50.

This wasn't a one-time glitch or a display lag. The usage page was checked again after waiting, specifically to rule out a delayed update, and the number held at 200. The 50-credit figure shown before generating simply doesn't match what gets charged after.

Confirmed directly against the account's real usage ledger: the pre-generation estimate read 50 credits. The actual charge was 200 — four times higher.

200 Is Actually ElevenLabs' Own Documented Price

This isn't a hidden or undocumented charge. ElevenLabs' own pricing page, under "How many credits does each product use?", lists Sound Effects at 200 credits per generation — matching the real charge exactly, not the 50 the generator itself displayed in the moment.

In other words: the tool's own live cost estimate contradicts the tool's own published pricing, for the exact same feature.

Why This Actually Matters

On ElevenLabs' Free plan, 200 credits is 2% of the entire monthly allowance for a single sound effect — a meaningfully different budgeting reality than what a 50-credit estimate would suggest if you're planning out how many generations your monthly quota actually covers.

This isn't about ElevenLabs hiding the real price. It's published, it's public, and it's easy to find. The gap is specifically between what the generator shows you in the moment you're about to click, and what its own documentation says elsewhere.

The One Thing You Can Actually Do

Don't budget off the number shown directly above the Generate button on Sound Effects. Check your real usage page after your first generation, compare it against the credit costs listed in ElevenLabs' own pricing FAQ, and plan your monthly credit usage off that number instead.
