Why Kling AI's "Free Trial" Isn't Actually Free

I had 3 trials left. Zero warnings on screen. I hit generate — 60 credits gone, and the video still came out watermarked.

What I Was Actually Testing

Kling AI markets its free trial around resolution — try 1080p, try 4K, no subscription required. That part is genuinely true. What isn't shown anywhere near the Generate button is what actually happens to your account when you use it.

The Discovery

On a fresh account with 66 credits and a "3 trials left" badge sitting on the 1080p/4K mode selector, I ran one generation — a straightforward 5-second, 1080p clip with native audio, a candle flickering on a rainy windowsill. Nothing on the generation screen itself warned that this trial would cost anything beyond the trial count.

The Real Cost

Hitting Generate consumed exactly 60 of my 66 credits — confirmed by the balance dropping from 66 to 6 the moment it ran. Kling's own progress bar estimated "2 minutes." It actually took roughly 3 minutes 32 seconds, with the estimate shifting to "30s" long before it was anywhere close to done.

Confirmed on the downloaded file itself, not just the browser preview: the watermark is baked into the exported video, not a player-only overlay.

When it finished, the video itself was genuinely well made — the flame flickered naturally, the rain moved convincingly across the glass. It also had "KlingAI 3.0" stamped in the corner, watermarked the same as any unpaid generation.

Where the Disclosure Actually Lives

Kling isn't hiding this outright. Buried on the separate pricing page, "Brand watermark removal" is listed as a feature unlocked starting on the Standard plan ($6.99/mo) — alongside 1080p/4K generation and commercial-use rights. It's real, and it's disclosed. It's just not anywhere near the screen where you actually decide to spend a trial.

What This Doesn't Mean

One generation on one account isn't a claim about every account or every setting. Credit costs likely vary by resolution, length, and whether native audio is enabled — worth checking your own balance before generating rather than assuming it'll match exactly what I saw.

The One Thing You Can Actually Do

Before you burn a trial, check the plan comparison table on Kling's pricing page, not just the generation screen. If watermark removal and generation credits matter to you, that page is genuinely the only place Kling tells you outright.
