Why Your OpusClip Clips Come Out the Wrong Length

The Problem

I uploaded a video to OpusClip expecting to control roughly how long my output clips would be. Instead, every clip came back a different, unpredictable length — some under 30 seconds, some pushing close to 3 minutes, with no consistency between runs.

The cause turned out to be sitting in plain sight, one dropdown away.

The Default Nobody Notices

OpusClip's AI clipping settings include a "Clip Length" field. Out of the box, it's set to auto (0m-3m) — meaning the tool decides, somewhere in a 3-minute window, how long each clip should be. There's no indication when you first upload that this is even a setting you can change; it just runs on the default.

That's zero real control over the one variable that matters most for Shorts — a 3-minute range covers everything from a usable 15-second clip to something four times too long to post as a Short at all.

The Actual Fix

The Clip Length dropdown has real options once you open it: under 30 seconds, 30-59s, 60-89s, 90s-3m, and 3-5 minutes. Picking one of these directly — rather than leaving it on auto — gives you an exact, predictable output length every time.

This is one of the few times I can point to a genuine fix rather than just a finding. Most tool quirks I test don't have a clean answer — this one does.

Worth Knowing on the Free Plan

OpusClip's free plan comes with a watermark and limited features by default — worth knowing going in, same as any free tier. The clip-length setting works the same way regardless of plan; it's not a paid-only fix.
