Submagic's "AI Thumbnails" Button Isn't Actually Submagic
I clicked the "AI Thumbnails" button in Submagic's own sidebar expecting a feature of the plan I was already testing. Instead I landed in a second product, with its own logo, its own pricing, and its own paywall.
What I Was Actually Testing
Submagic's sidebar has a "AI Thumbnails" entry sitting alongside the editor's other core tools — Home, Calendar, Analytics, API & Integrations. Nothing about its placement suggests it's anything other than one more feature bundled into whatever Submagic plan you're already paying for.
I clicked it on a real Trial account to see what it actually did.
It Doesn't Add a Feature — It Opens a Second Product
Clicking "AI Thumbnails" doesn't unlock a panel inside Submagic. It loads an entirely different interface: a different logo top-left, a different top nav (Tutorial, Be an affiliate, Credits, Subscribe), and a separate credit balance that has nothing to do with Submagic's own AI Credits. The real product name is Thumbmagic, and it has its own account dropdown with exactly one option — Logout — confirming it's a thin single-sign-on layer over Submagic's login, not a fully bundled feature.
One precise, verifiable detail: the URL doesn't jump to a different domain. It's still app.submagic.co, just with /thumbnail-generator appended to the path. Same domain, genuinely different product bundled at the routing level but billed and branded entirely separately.
Two Pricing Ladders, One Sidebar

Both ladders are billed yearly with the same 40%-off toggle convention — the pricing pages even look related. They're not the same subscription. Paying for Submagic's top tier doesn't touch Thumbmagic's meter at all.
The Download Gate Is Stricter Than a Watermark
I generated a real thumbnail from an actual published video, using real Thumbmagic credits — the generation completed, and the result was genuinely good, on-topic, and usable. The credit balance dropped exactly as expected, confirming the spend was real, not simulated.
Then I tried to get the file. Clicking Download — not "Remove watermark," the plain download button — triggered the exact same "Choose Your Plan" subscription paywall. There's no watermarked fallback file, no low-res preview you can keep. You can spend real credits generating a thumbnail and still have nothing to show for it without a second, separate subscription on top of whatever you already pay for the editor.
Why This Actually Matters
This isn't really about Submagic doing something unusual — bundling a second product behind a sidebar button, sharing a login, and running it on separate pricing is a real, deliberate product decision, not an accident. The issue is purely about expectations: if you assume every button in your editor's sidebar is covered by the plan you're already paying for, you'll spend real credits finding out otherwise. Knowing the real map before you click saves that.
The One Thing You Can Actually Do
Before you generate anything from a sidebar button you haven't used yet, check two things: does clicking it change the logo or nav around it, and does the plain Download button (not just a watermark-removal upsell) actually complete. If either answer is "no," you're likely looking at a second product wearing your main tool's sidebar.
